June is National Safety Month, a time to raise awareness about keeping ourselves and those around us safe, both at work and in everyday life. One part of personal safety that is often overlooked is protecting your hearing. At Hometown Hearing Center, we’re here to help you understand how noise affects your ears and what you can do to prevent long-term damage.

The Impact of Loud Noise on Hearing
Sounds over 85 decibels, about as loud as city traffic, can cause hearing damage with repeated exposure. Even a single instance of noise above 100 decibels, like fireworks or a loud concert, can lead to permanent damage.
Loud noise damages the tiny hair cells in the inner ear that are essential for hearing. Once these cells are damaged, they do not regenerate. This type of damage can lead to permanent hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
Tips to Protect Your Hearing
Whether you're on the job, mowing the lawn, or enjoying a summer concert, keep these hearing protection tips in mind:
Avoid Excess Noise: Steer clear of environments where loud noise is common, or take steps to reduce your exposure such as sitting farther away from speakers or fireworks.
Lower the Volume: Keep personal devices and televisions at safe listening levels. Listening at 70 decibels or lower is ideal, especially over long periods.
Take Breaks: Give your ears a rest by stepping away from noisy environments when you can. Short breaks can go a long way in preserving your hearing.
Wear Hearing Protection: If you’re in a noisy job or hobby like construction, farming, factory work, or using power tools, earplugs or earmuffs are essential.
Get Regular Hearing Checks: Annual hearing evaluations help detect early signs of damage and can prevent further hearing loss.
